GOP’s Nonsense on Obama’s Next Supreme Court Nominee

Several Republicans are trotting out the nonsense that President Barack Obama better be careful when he appoints someone to replace soon-to-retire Supreme Court justice John Paul Stevens.

Take Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl of Arizona, who said, “I hope, however, he does not nominate an overly ideological person. That will be the test.”

But if Obama disappoints the Republicans? Why, the minor league party would just have to filibuster, Kyl warned.

Gosh, wouldn’t want anyone “overly ideological” on the court, would we?

Wouldn’t want someone like, say, Samuel Alito, nominated by George W. Bush.

Obama wouldn’t dare try to nominate someone as ideological on the left as Antonin Scalia, nominated by Ronald Reagan in 1986, is on the right — right?

And of course, Obama better lay hands off anyone as ideological as Clarence Thomas, nominated by George H.W. Bush in 1991.

Yep, those Republican presidents were the epitome of leaders who picked un-ideological Supreme Court nominees.
